Alpha-2A Adrenergic Receptor Description

The Alpha-2A adrenergic receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) primarily located in the central nervous system, particularly presynaptically, and also on certain peripheral tissues. It is activated by endogenous catecholamines, predominantly norepinephrine, to modulate neurotransmitter release and neuronal activity. Activation of this receptor typically leads to inhibition of adenylyl cyclase, subsequent reduction in cAMP levels, and often causes decreased sympathetic outflow and nerve impulse transmission.
