Drug Class
Cardiovascular System
VEGF/VEGFR inhibitors
Class Overview
VEGF/VEGFR inhibitors are medications that block the activity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor (VEGFR), which are proteins that stimulate the growth of new blood vessels. By inhibiting this process, these drugs help cut off the blood supply that tumors and certain eye conditions need to grow.
Mechanism of Action
These drugs work by preventing VEGF from binding to its receptor on blood vessel cells. This stops the signaling that would normally trigger the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). Without a blood supply, tumors cannot grow or spread, and abnormal blood vessels in the eye can be reduced.
