Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase Description

Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase is a homodimeric, integral membrane enzyme primarily localized to the endoplasmic reticulum and nuclear envelope. It catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of prostanoids from arachidonic acid via its cyclooxygenase activity. Subsequently, its peroxidase activity converts prostaglandin G2 to prostaglandin H2, a critical precursor for diverse biological mediators involved in inflammation, pain, fever, and various physiological processes.
